Provider Information Return (PIR)

Definition

A Provider Information Return is a structured set of questions CQC sends to a registered provider asking for evidence about the quality of its service, and the answers feed directly into how the service is assessed.

In practice

Provider Information Return (PIR) in practice

It is a request for evidence rather than a form to complete for its own sake. What you submit shapes what CQC looks at and what it expects to find.

Strong returns are specific: they cite what the service actually did, what changed as a result, and what the provider found when it looked. Weak returns restate policy and describe intentions, which tends to invite closer scrutiny rather than deflect it, because nothing in them can be checked.

Answers should map to the relevant quality statements, and anything claimed should be evidenced somewhere you can produce on request. Contradicting your own PIR at assessment is worse than having said less in the first place.
