Nominated Individual

Definition

A Nominated Individual is the person a CQC-registered organisation names as responsible for supervising how its regulated activities are carried on, and they must be an employed director, manager or company secretary of the provider.

In practice

Nominated Individual in practice

The role exists so that CQC has one named, accountable person inside an organisation rather than a company name alone. It applies to organisations, not to individual or partnership providers.

A Nominated Individual is not the same thing as a Registered Manager, although one person can hold both roles in a small service. The Registered Manager runs the regulated activity day to day and is registered with CQC in their own right. The Nominated Individual supervises how the organisation carries on that activity and is accountable for it at provider level.

CQC assesses the Nominated Individual for suitability, and the organisation must tell CQC when the role changes hands. Naming someone who is not genuinely involved in the running of the service is a common reason applications are questioned, because CQC will expect that person to answer for the provider.
