Regulated activity
A regulated activity is an activity listed in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 that may not lawfully be carried on in England without registering with CQC.
Regulated activity in practice
Registration attaches to the activity, not to the label a business gives itself. Calling a service supported living, wellbeing support or concierge care makes no difference: what matters is whether what you actually do falls inside one of the listed activities.
The activities include personal care, accommodation together with nursing or personal care, treatment of disease, disorder or injury, diagnostic and screening procedures, surgical procedures and transport services, among others. A single service often carries on more than one.
Getting this wrong is expensive in both directions. Registering for activities you do not provide invites scrutiny you did not need, and providing one you are not registered for is a criminal offence.
